Ever since I was young, I’ve looked for ways to serve my community. I saw the impact I could have and discovered ways to give back. I wanted to grow, develop, learn, and give that opportunity to others around me. I didn’t expect real estate to be one of those opportunities.
“I quit my job today.” My husband’s words stopped me dead in my tracks. He had been talking about how he wanted to leave his job to pursue a career in real estate, so it wasn’t out of left field. Still, I didn’t know he was going to do it that day!
In the long run, it turned out to be a good move. He’s naturally introverted, which made him magnificent at listening to clients. I saw how his role allowed him to serve our community, which has always been important to me.
I had the good fortune of earning the Boettcher Foundation Scholarship, which covered my entire college education. I was always actively involved in leadership and clubs, looking for ways to benefit others - a lesson I learned from my mother. She even initiated the creation of a preschool program for disadvantaged members of the community. Her influence inspired me to help in as many ways as I could.
The foundation that gave me the scholarship is centered around the Colorado community and introduced me to the most thoughtful, intelligent and sincere scholars I could have hoped to meet. They are focused on making real connections with people. I also met my husband the first weekend of college. Whenever anyone asked me what I wanted to be, my only answer was “a good person.” Whatever job allowed me to do that would suit me just fine.
My yearning for an active, community-centric job led me to teaching. I was a teacher for 13 years, though my family was always my priority. When I had my kids, I gave back through involvement in their interests and school events.
While I was both working full-time and raising the kids, I decided to earn my MBA, a lifelong dream of mine. I knew it wasn't a fiscally sound decision, but it came from the heart. One day in class, I was calculating how long it would take me to pay off my school debt. To my horror, I discovered that with my current salary, I wouldn’t have everything paid off until I was 70! I also didn’t know how I would apply the degree to my job. Should I change careers entirely?
I talked about it with my husband. He’s always been a stalwart and supportive partner, though his advice surprised me. He thought I should go into real estate with him. At first, I thought of a million reasons why I shouldn't. Still, the idea stuck with me. My husband would be a good business partner, and our styles would complement each other well.
Sometime after getting my real estate license, the Boettcher Foundation was looking for coaches. It was my opportunity to give back to an organization that had helped me grow and develop from an early age. I found coaching incredibly fulfilling. Today, I’m certified as a life coach and a real estate productivity coach. I have taught over 200 classes to consumers and agents since 2009, most free of charge. I want to foster engagement on important topics to increase people’s understanding and skills in real estate. The coaching and classes make me even better at my job, and I now have the ability to coach my clients in real estate investments as well.
Since my husband’s retirement, I’ve been a solo agent. My current way of serving my community includes my work as a REALTOR®, welcoming people and helping them find what’s best for their future. I look forward to doing the same for you!
My husband and I were tenants of the first home we bought. Our landlord told us we would either need to move out or buy the house. When we decided to buy it, we told her we wanted to find a good REALTOR®. She assured us, “I’ll take care of you.” She took us! We trusted her. That was a mistake we paid for for years.
That’s the sort of experience that stays with you. I help my clients be better informed and make better decisions. I have a soft spot for first-time homebuyers and seniors, since the stakes can be much higher for them. Clients know they can trust me to be honest, but also bring a sense of humor and fun to the transaction. This is an exciting time!
My consultative approach means that I’ll ask the right questions, nail down the details, negotiate effectively, and do what it takes for my clients to reach their goals. So, let’s find out what I can do for you to meet your goals!
Sincerely,
Beth Baker Owens, REALTOR®
